Illustrator Izzy Hodge traces inspirations for her animal adventurers
“I’ve always drawn a great deal of inspiration from children’s picture books and films, which often feature animals as the characters. I particularly like placing impossible elements like anthropomorphic animals in what could potentially be a realistic scenario.
“Travel lends itself perfectly to these ideas – it not only gave me really interesting mechanisms to draw but the range of different classes of transport made it exciting to think about what sort of characteristics each animal might have. Some of my favourite illustrators include Kay Nielsen, Arthur Rackham and Shaun Tan. I’ve also always been drawn to the decorative nature of art nouveau. A great deal of inspiration comes from Disney and Pixar too – not only as an illustrator but a storyteller too.”
